I agree with you on most things but not this one. As much as we like to take sides I don’t think it’s as clear cut as you think. Imagine the US response to attempts by China to set up Military Alliances with Mexico and/or Canada. NATO expansion was a real concern. The Ukraine Russia War could have been averted. NATO was a clear Red Line for Putin and Ukraine with US backing ignored it.
Ukraine did not become a state until 1922. This was a creation of Lenin. Much of Eastern and Southern Ukraine and Crimea has historically been Russian and most of the population ethically Russian. Much of the population in Western Ukraine does not have same historical ties to Russia.
While Russia and Putin might not have been happy with the borders they showed no interest in expansion until the coup in 2014
